The Shift: From Willpower to Design
The throughline across all of this procrastination research is consistent: the interventions that work don’t ask you to try harder. They ask you to feel differently about the task (self-compassion), remove the decision point that allows avoidance (implementation intentions), or change the environment so that starting requires less emotional energy (environmental design).
This is a meaningful departure from how most people frame productivity. The default assumption — that you need more discipline, better habits, a stronger morning routine — treats procrastination as a character deficit. The research treats it as a predictable response to emotional discomfort, one that can be addressed through design rather than willpower.
